Leather Subarmalis
|

The
Subarmalis was identified as protective piece of
garment worn under armour to prevent chafing and
soiling.
A 4th century Roman description, which uses the term thoracomachus,
says it is made of thick cloth, covered with leather (or
with a separate leather garment over it) for
waterproofing.
We have chosen to craft ours from 5/6 oz
oil tanned leather which provides decent protective
qualities and comparable protection against chafing. The shoulders
seams are hand sewn with imitation sinew for strength
and sides lace up for greater adjustment. Although we
refer to the styles as Lorica or Musculata versions,
these garments were also worn with the Hamata and other
styles of armour.Available in "Lorica" version (without
shoulder pteruges), or 2 "Musculata" versions (with
shoulder pteruges, or with additional second row of
adorned pteruges). Fits chest size up to 48" and waist
up to 42".
