Armour Displays: Cuirass and Helm with Stand

Renaissance Armour Display w/stand

The Cuirass (Armour breastplate and backplate) was certainly the most versatile piece of armour throughout history! Its use spanned through many centuries providing protection to the vital chest and back areas while allowing freedom of movement to the arms and legs which was so crucial during combat.

When paired with a  Burgonet helm, it afforded complete protection to the head, face and neck during battle. This wearable cuirass is sized for the average person of the 16th century.
Armor pieces such as these were most popular throughout England and Scotland during the 16th century.

Complete Renaissance Armour set, Helm and stand.

Imperial Roman Armour Display w/stand

Rome ruled one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen, an empire of unified government, communication, and a strong army of superbly well-drilled fighters whose discipline and weapons proved superior to most others. A great chapter in mans history and its understanding of warfare in the classical world culminates from the battles fought by the great armies of Rome and the legions of troopers whose loyalty and support gave power to such Generals such as Julius Caesar.

The main armor of a soldier of this time consisted of a “Lorica Segmentata’’ cuirass whose segmented sections and hinged steel pieces riveted to leather straps afforded maneuverability with the added protection of plate steel. The front was laced to fit. The protection of the head was also vital, and this was accomplished by the wearing of a helm. This armor display features the Imperial Roman Helm with a magnificent red plume, worn by Generals and those in command, provided the needed protection to the head while still allowing for an unobstructed line of sight important in battle. Our Churburg armour is fully articulated and wearable and boasts many of the features found on the original suit. Many of the individual steel plates that make up the 16 ga. breastplate (which has a lance rest attached to the right hand side) and arm-harness are bordered with decorative etched brass strips. Supplied with an iron display stand, the harness features a round section riveted mail shirt and aventail.

This Milanese full-harness displays the characteristic robust and rounded appearance of armour produced in northern Italy throughout the 15th century. Armour of this type incorporates large and smooth glancing surfaces in its construction, the theory being that these rounded surfaces would help to deflect an opponents weapons. The embossed ridges and fluting that typify armour of the Gothic style are generally absent in Milanese style armour. Other typical Milanese features include mail sabatons (foot protection) and mitten gauntlets. Many of the parts that compose our Milanese armour, including the T-face barbute helm, are based on the ‘Avant’ armour that is housed in the Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow. This near-complete harness was made at the Corio workshop in Milan, and dates from around 1440.

Included with the armour are the mail skirt, standard and voiders pictured, featuring Wedge Rivets and Flat Ring construction.
