Open Face Celeta Helmet -14 Gauge
The barbute or celeta was
developed in Italy during the 15th century but its roots can be
traced back to ancient Greece and its development may have been
influenced by a growing interest at the time in artefacts of the
ancient world. These helmets were popular throughout Europe and
offered an alternative to the more restrictive sallet. They had no
visor, fitted closely to the head and neck and the sides often
extended almost to the shoulders and round in front of the face. The
extended sides protected the neck and jaw, dispensing with the need
for a separate bevor or gorget.
Our open face celeta is based on an original from the Wallace
Collection in London and our T-faced barbute replicates the helmet
adorning the ‘Avant’ armour housed at the Kelvingrove Museum,
Glasgow. Both are constructed from 14 gauge steel plate and are
supplied with an adjustable leather liner and chinstrap.

Kettle Hat -14 Gauge
The kettle hat or chapel der
fer was widely worn on the battlefields of Europe from the 12th to
the 15th century and throughout the 16th and 17th centuries in its
modified form of the morion or pikeman’s pot. The same basic design
of an open-faced helm comprising a bowl and wide brim was
resurrected in the 20th century when helmets like the famous Brodie
of WWI became standard military headgear. This simple design has
remained popular over the centuries because it is relatively cheap
to produce, offered good protection during hand-to-hand combat when
its rounded shape would help to deflect blows from edged weapons and
its wide brim helped to shield its wearer from projectiles that were
dropped or shot from above without over restricting their field of
vision.
As history continued, many
parts of a traditional suit of armor were dropped to increase
mobility. Along with the breastplate, helmets continued to be worn.
One popular style of helmet was the “secret helm.” Though there is
no particular description for a secret helm, one would be worn under
a large hat or military issue cover, as to provide extra protection.
This secret will provide great protection whether you are looking
for a normal wear helm, or you want a little surprise for your next
duel.

Used in the 13th Century,
Barrel helms were a necessity for men at arms. They provided the
most coverage and protection for the weight. The barrel helm was
typically worn over mail, and originally only had the ocularium
opening (or eye slots). Ours is modeled after the later version
which included holes on the lower half to improve air-flow.
The "Pigface" Bascinet- now in

Jaw Bone Visor Helmet
Visors were a late addition to medieval helmet. They came a time when
men at arms had to decided whether they preferred addition protection
or better visibility. The visor changed that, now a man-at-arms could
raise the visor to see the field, then close it to allow him better
protection. Our Jaw Bone Visor Helmet has all of these advantages.
Made of high quality steel, it is sure to protect you, as well as give
you the needed visibility.
The
sallet or salade was a popular and elegant headpiece in use across
much of Europe throughout the second half of the 15th century. Various
forms developed during this time, they all fitted closely to the front
and sides of the head but many, particularly those in the German
style, flared away from the back of the neck and had extended tails,
some very long and occasionally articulated, that swept back to a
point. Most sallets covered the face to just below the nose and had a
slit across the front through which the wearer could see. Some had
fixed face protection, often referred to as a tipping sallet, whilst
others had moveable visors. They were often worn together with a bevor
because the sallet itself often gave no protection to the jaw and
throat.
This new Viking Ocular style
helm is a limited edition and includes a longer lower face and neck
guard. Crafted from 16 GA polished steel and unique in SCA design.

Valsgarde is one of the
oldest known excavation sites in Sweden. Containing an untold amount
of treasures from the last two millennium there is no way to measure
its importance. Included among the find was this exquisite helm, which
we have reproduced in exacting detail. It is estimated to be from the
8th century. 14 gauge steel, available in medium and large.
The Coppergate
Helmet (AH2153N) was recovered during excavations in the ancient walled
city of York in 1982. Dating from the 8th century, the Anglo-Saxon
helmet is of great archaeological importance. The inscripiton on the
crest is an invocation for protection from the helmet's owner Oshere
to the Holy Trinity. This reconstruction clearly illustrates the skill
of the 8th century craftsmen.

The Gjermundbu
Helm (AH2190N), is based on a classic Viking helm found in a Norwegian
burial mound. Found in nine fragments, the helm has been re-constructed
and is now housed in the Museum of National Antiquites in Oslo. It
dates from around 970 CE and is considered to be the finest helm found
of that era. The "spectacles" (offically "occularia"),
provided excellent facial and nasal protection, while chain mail provided
flexible protection to the back and sides of the neck. As with the
original, our Gjermundbu helm is provided with a leather chin strap.

The original of
the kabuto (helmet) of the Dragon Armour is interesting inasmuch as
the bowl of the helmet came from the Momoyama period. The suji bachi
style of bowl, with overlapped and riveted plates was typical of the
finest helmet makers (katchu-shi) of this period, borne out by the
signature of the Saotome smith “Ienao” on the back plate. The menpo
(mask) is a typical ressei men of the type made in Nara. Mounted on
a solid wood display stand, this helmet will be an outstanding addition
to any collection and will complement any décor beautifully.
