Leather Scale armour has
been found as early as the 6th Century B.C
This Eurasian style scale cuirass is on
display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
NYC.
Based
on the style and construction of the
Museum's example, it seems most likely that
the armor was made by one of the nomadic
cultures of Eurasia—possibly the Scythians,
who dominated the steppes from the sixth to
the second century B.C. Our own version of
this cuirass is listed below under "Asian
and Ancient".
Very
little leather armour has survived the years
when it actually saw battle, but from what
remains have been found and what we know
of documented knowledge, we have recreated
our versions of the following cuirasses
and body protection, with the greatest effort
and care devoted to accuracy, protection
and application. Metal ornamentations may
vary from depicted images.

Century Breastplate

No
documented remains of a leather cuirass or
breastplate from this period has been
recovered to date, however we do know that
leather armour has been found dating to as
early as the 6th Century B.C. This thick
13/15 oz leather armour grade cuirass could
very well fit in with some of the armour
worn and depicted in early 14th Century
Effigies found in England and possibly from
even earlier Saxony. Since "courbouille"
or "cuir bouille" (boiled) leather
was known to have been been employed for arm
and leg defenses, it follows that a heavy
leather breastplate such as this in
conjunction with maille could have formed a
formidable slashing and blunt attack
distribution along with the piercing defense
of the maille.

Century German Gothic Cuirass |

German
Gothic style armour from the 15th Century
was characterized by sharp lines and
fluting. The Plackard often had fluting as
did the attached tassets. Articulation of
our German style cuirass allows for a great
deal of mobility and is accented by complete
cuirbouille and wax hardening. This gives
the Plackard greater resemblance to the
actual curved nature of the original as well
as greater strength and toughness compared
with other leather cuirasses. Heavy duty
peened solid rivets attach the main sections
of the cuirass to prevent popped rivets.
