Head and Helms

We've put together some leather helms which resemble some historic finds. In most cases we are crafting these from 13/15 armour grade leather and further hardening them with traditional medieval cuirbouille methods. These are great for larp or faire use, but have been put to severe tests as well for durability. We also have a selection of steel helms from GDFB, many of which are a great compliment to the line of transitional armour we craft right here.

Open Faced Sallet

Leather Archer's SalletLeather Archer's SalletLeather Archer's Sallet

The "Open faced" or "Archer's" Sallet was common amongst infantrymen and archers in the early 15th Century and up until the late 15th Century. The unobstructed view for the archer of crossbowman was essential for a clear line of sight. Our recreation in leather is crafted from 13/15 oz leather using our 4 step traditional cuirbouille method of hardening. Although not allowed by SCA specifications, we guarantee that this is about as close as a leather helm can come, and the only one we know of available in leather. Includes adjustable leather liner and chin strap.

Available in brown or black.

Great Bascinet

leather bascinet

The Great bascinet was the first helm to be worn with complete suits of plate armor, and could be found on the battlefields all over Europe. The Great Bascinet was used in battle up until the last quarter of the Hundred Years War 1337 - 1453 between England and France. They are a development from the earlier pig faced or hound skull bascinets which were shorter, with mail aventail protection for the throat and neck. Our Great Bascinet crafted in 13/15 oz cuirbouille leather replicates the steel version which replaced the mail with plate armour, and combines the rounded skullcap of the Klappvisor helm with the rounded nose of the Great bascinet.  The face is protected by a hinged  rounded visor pierced with numerous holes for sight and ventilation.Wearable with an ordinary arming cap. Includes chin strap.

To our knowledge the only heavy leather bascinet currently in production.

Leather Corinthian Helm

Leather Corinthian Helm

The Corinthian helm originated in ancient Greece and took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was a helmet made of bronze which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for the eyes and mouth. A large curved projection protected the nape of the neck.

Out of combat, a Greek "hoplitewould wear the helmet tipped upward for comfort. This practice gave rise to a series of variant forms in Italy, where the slits were almost closed, since the helmet was no longer pulled over the face but worn cap-like. Although the classical Corinthian helmet fell out of use among the Greeks in favor of more open types, the Italo-Corinthian types remained in use until the 1st century AD, being used, among others, by the Roman army.

Our version is crafted from Cuirbouille hardened 13/15 oz.leather. The intense heat and protective finish increase the hardness of the heavy leather and protects it from mildew and  moisture.

"T" Face Barbute Helmet -14 Gauge Steel

The barbute or celeta was developed in Italy during the 15th century but its roots can be traced back to ancient Greece and its development may have been influenced by a growing interest at the time in artefacts of the ancient world. These helmets were popular throughout Europe and offered an alternative to the more restrictive sallet. They had no visor, fitted closely to the head and neck and the sides often extended almost to the shoulders and round in front of the face. The extended sides protected the neck and jaw, dispensing with the need for a separate bevor or gorget.

Our open face celeta is based on an original from the Wallace Collection in London and our T-faced barbute replicates the helmet adorning the ‘Avant’ armour housed at the Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow. Both are constructed from 14 gauge steel plate and are supplied with an adjustable leather liner and chinstrap. Available in medium or large.
