These
Round Shields are applicable for Norman or
Saxon period re-enactments. Resin impregnated 3/4"
composite wood is twice the strength of plywood
versus bending and 4-5 times more resistant to
moisture. As shown edged in leather, primed and with
central conical boss constructed of 14 gauge spun steel. 24"

Viking "Plank" Shield

The Viking 'Plank" shield was
historically composed of sections or "planks" of
wood which were glued and butted together.
Depictions of these shields also revealed that they
were likely held together around the circumference
by edging which could have been leather, rawhide or
other similar securing material. Our viking shield
uses two overlapped sections of 1/4" Birch wood. The
surface "planks" are glued together and also to a
1/4" Birch solid circular backing to increase the
structural strength, and to make the total thickness
1/2". Then the front surface is permeated with clear
resin coating to inhibit moisture and add further
strength. The edge is rawhide wrapped and bound with
alum tanned lacing, and the center domed boss is
constructed from 14 gauge spun steel and is
riveted/bolted with solid brass rivets and bolts.

Heater Shield Blank

The heater shield is a form of shield characterized
by its distinctive shape. Around 1250, the heater
shield emerged as kite shields were becoming
flat-topped and more triangular. Smaller than the
kite-shield, it was more manageable and could be
used either mounted or on foot. From the 15th
century, it evolved into highly
specialized jousting equipment, while with the
development of full plate armour it ceased to be
employed on the battlefield.
The name "heater" is a modern term. It comes from
the shape, which was noted to resemble an
old-style flat iron.
Our heater shield blank is crafted in historically correct
style, from 1/2 dished(curved) birch wood. It is
available either leather or canvas covered.
Comes ready for you to prime and paint with your own
coat of arms or whatever you please.

Kite Shield Blank

A kite shield was a distinct type of shield from the
10th–14th centuries and most commonly associated
with the Normans. It was either a reverse teardrop
shape or later on, flat-topped. The tapering point
extended down to either a distinct or rounded point.
Believed to be an evolution of the simple round
shield purely to guard one whole flank of a rider
when in combat, the shield gained popularity amongst
professional soldiers as it allowed them to guard
their foreleg when in combat.
Our Kite Shield blank is made with 1/2" thick dished(curved)
birch wood
and covered in canvas. Comes ready for you to prime
and paint with your own coat of arms or whatever you
please.

Bucklers
A buckler
is a small shield,
6" - 18" in diameter, gripped in the fist. It was
generally used as a companion weapon in
hand-to-hand combat during the Medieval
period, as its size made it poor protection against
missile weapons but useful in deflecting the blow of
an opponent's sword or mace.

defensive and offensive arm. Indispensable in both
classical rapier play and I.33 sparring, it has
become an essential part of the modern swordsman's
